Impact

KZYX is the only public radio station currently serving all of Mendocino County, as well as rural adjacent regions of Lake, Sonoma, and Humboldt counties, and streaming live online to listeners around the world.

The new Ukiah station will allow KZYX to:

  • Improve delivery and reliability of news and community programming to local residents. Almost 50% of Mendocino County residents lack access to reliable broadband, meaning that radio continues to be a critical part of local media and communications infrastructure. Securing radio services is a critical need for all of Mendocino County.

  • Improve our broadcasting service. Newer studio broadcasting technology will make KZYX more stable and reliable in emergency situations and enable us to better serve our vast broadcast area of more than 3500 square miles. We are the predominant news and information terrestrial broadcaster in Mendocino County, and our FM signals cover Mendocino County and parts of Lake, Humboldt, and Sonoma Counties--wider coverage than any other station in this part of Northern California provides.

  • Strengthen KZYX’s infrastructure. Relocating the station to Ukiah and improving the station’s technology opens the door for new people power, talent, and opportunities for new programming, new funding streams, and community engagement opportunities.

  • Enhance community engagement. KZYX’s remote location in Philo limits opportunities for students, elected officials, and the majority of the county’s population who live in population hubs closer to Ukiah, Willits, and Fort Bragg. A new central site immediately opens new growth and engagement opportunities to build a new community of programmers, radio enthusiasts, and donors to the station’s mission.

Most importantly, the new station will secure KZYX’s critical contributions to the media and communications infrastructure of Mendocino communities now and far into the future.
